The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Electrical Bay Blinker flasher

I bought a new 6 volt flasher and the blinkers worked. Then I closed the hood and they didn't. I had the passenger side on. The new flasher was real hot. All I can think of is the passenger side front hot wire is grounded. Did this fry the flasher? I didn't get a chance to check.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Could be a bad flasher. I think if you had a dead short in a wire going to the light, you would have seen smoke and had some melted wires, unless you have a fuse. I think the aftermarket flasher units come with an inline fuse. Have you checked for that?

If you have a VOM it is very easy to check for a short.

Maybe try using a test light also to follow along. I rewired my 52 and the test light helped alot. I had a few bad grounds to clean up too. Just a Thought.

At first I was very happy to see the blinkers work then when I closed the hood all went sourer. Poop

That is when I went in the truck and the flasher was hot. I had to get a rag to pull it out. Oh, and stupid me did not put a fuse in line. Poop

If the bulb and holder did ground when I shut the hood would this happen?

I don't think those flasher units are grounded to the case, because they have no ground. They are a switch. But even if they were, you would be getting a ground to ground. No short.

The thermal type are designed to work by producing heat, so if it got "stuck" it might just keep producing heat until it burned up.

You could just jump the socket with a small jumper wire and see if the lights will come on. They should burn steady. Obviously if it get hot real quick, pull it back out

I am thinking of pulling the front running light/blinker out of the front passenger side and see if I can figure it out.
