Hey everyone,

I know GMC made a larger version of the COE with wider front fenders & Steps (Over a wider front axle). I also know the series numbers for the wider ones are 450 and 470. What I can't seem to do is look at a picture and tell the difference. I have even read Spankys posts instructing me on the difference and I still cannot seem to do it.

So.... Look at this example and tell me... Is this one of the wide ones?

Let me know what you all think... and why you think that.

Thanks,
Greg

The red one is a 350 series 2 ton. Also the gray one seems to be the same, but can't tell for sure since it doesn't have steps attached to the fenders.

Thanks Spanky, Those are the pictures I was talking about.

I get how to tell which COE it is by looking at the width of the steps or the fenders from that angle. But... How does one tell from the front? Are all the front bumpers the same width? If so, the ones with fenders that hang out of the sides of the bumper (are wider than the bumper) must indicate a larger COE.

There must be other clues.

Any hints Spanky?

10-4, All of the bumpers are indeed the same on the '47-'53 COE's, & conventionals. The '54 model front bumpers have less of a curvature to them. The fenders of the 450, & 470 COE do indeed set out past the bumper, as in this photo, http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2454689440052570246GbOcVk

Also, the 450, & 470 series COE's came standard with 6 lug wheels, front, & rear. 10 stud front, & rear Budd wheels were an option, so were Dayton wheels. The 2 ton 350 series GMC COE's were 5 lug front, 10 lug rear. I've seen a couple of '47, & '48 350 2 tons, with 5 lug front, & 5 lug rear.

Also,I'm told the 2 tonners with NAPCO four wheel drive were 10 lug front and rear. I gave brief thought to drilling my '54 350's front hubs and installing the other 5 studs in each one, just for the symmetry.
