Does anyone know if the 48 1/2 ton pickup came with a 4 speed on the floor as an option? Or were they all 3 speeds on the column?

I had a 48 way back in the early 80s. It had a four on the floor, although I always took off in second. Pretty sure it was original.

A four speed transmission was a Regular Production Option on all 1/2 ton Advance-Design trucks (1947-1955). Standard equipment on 1/2 ton trucks was the 3-speed (shifter on the floor in 1947 and shifter on the column all other years).

Tim, it's hard to tell what you meant in your response. By "1.2 ton trucks" did you mean to say "1/2 ton trucks" or "1(to)2 ton trucks?"

I'm pretty sure the '48's were three-on-the-tree. Mine is, as are all the other '48 half tons I've seen. The '47's were floor shifts, and they went to the column shift in '48.

I won't blame that on the drink but I'll blame it on the silly iPad 3-screen keyboard.

I will edit the post above (I am now at a real computer).

Thanks,

My '48 Chevy 1/2 ton is an original 4-speed on-the-floor. That was an available option. I rarely use the "granny gear"--starting out in 2nd gear most times.
