I had a choice: register it and insure it as a Historic Vehicle, and drive whenever there's a parade. Or keep Year of Manufacture plates, and insure it at the rates of a 'big rig' working dump truck. Is there a way to insure it with the YoM plates, and insure it for about 5000 miles a year, make a few dump runs, landscape runs (sod, sand, etc) Are there any options? I've tried Hagerty, but since I have YoM commercial plates, they won't do it JC Taylor says "parade use".... Any ideas??? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | Bet you'd have better responses in the General Truck talk forum. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 1 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 1 | You should be able to insure it with one of the classic car insurance agencies. They do have a few restrictions though. You have to keep the truck garaged and can't be your primary vehicle. I insured mine (42 1&1/2 ton) with normal street tags with Condon Skelly (hope I'm not breaking any rules posting the name) for less than 100 per year. The commercial plates may be an issue with them, just read that part.

Apparently if you are driving a vehicle with a "Rated" Gross Weight of excess of 10,000 lbs. you are required to have a commercial drivers license.
Also, California now requires a Liability coverage of get this, $750,000.00 for vehicles of over 10,000 lbs. And a rated weight of 26,000 lbs. or more...
Anyone driving in California may want to stop by their respective DMV and pick up a Commercial Driver Handbook (2010-2011).
As for insurance I got Progressive for $397.00 6 months coverage. Geico was about the same but I need to get my Commercial Drivers License for vehicles over 26,000 lbs..
My GMC 454-30 is 19,500 lbs. GVW and 35,000 lbs. Gross Combined Vehicle Weight. Have to ask CHP what is meant by Gross Weight Rated.
