I was thinking about using a frame rail mount tank on my '46 half ton, but trying to use the stock filler location. I was going to have a tube made to go from the stock filler under the seat towards the tank and then a flexible hose to take into account the motion of the cab in relation to the tank. I don't want a bed filler as I plan on using the truck for hauling once in a while, and may need to refill while hauling.

Is this madness? Will it work? Is it safe?

Thanks!

you would probably have to move the filler neck further up the cab for gravity reasons, im thinking that might be all you need to do,

I did this to my 51. Installed a ss tank on the frame rail just behind the passenger side behind the cab. I used exhaust tubing to plumb everything. Made a gas hose connection to the stock filler tube that goes through to the outside filler cap area.
Due to some cab movement between the frame & the new tank, made a leather flexing gasket to allow some movement between the cab floor and the top entrance to gas tank. Works very well and the best of it all I put my spare tire where it was originally, under the bed. From the outside it looks the same as the original. I'm very happy with the look and how it functions. Best of all no tank inside the cab.

Vickraft,

I might give that a try. Where did you get your tank?

Thanks!

This was a clearance Item I got from this Company about a year & a half ago. They sell Stainless or regular metal. Check them out I'm sure they can help. Good luck. Let me know if you have any more questions. This wasn't hard to do, and I expecially like the stock look from the outside.

I just completed the install similar to vickraft with a Tanks Inc universal tank U1-GH except substituted the 2 inch filler tube with a 2.25 filler. Add the 60 degree elbow and it comes up through the floor of the cab behind the seat. I had a muffler shop make me an extension of the filler tube.

I made brackets to strap the tank up between the frame and the drive shaft. I used a stock filler tube that came off a stock tank through a hole in the floor behind the seat into the tank. I also made an access hole for the sending unit and fuel line.

BigErn I will attempt to email or PM some pictures to you.
