*Admin* If this belongs in paint - I apologize *

I've got my Filling Station paint by PPG in front of me - the formula sticker they put on covers all the instructions for applying. So I hit up the website to see if there were special instructions - drying time etc....

First thing I notice is that they talk about adding DXR80 hardener...

http://www.tcpglobal.com/docs/ppgdarp.pdf

I haven't seen mention of this on this forum thus far. Proceeding w/o the hardener unless someone advises me otherwise.

Lonnie?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, you need to use the hardener or it will not dry.
According to the tech sheet, the mixing ratio is 8 to 3 to 1.
8 parts color, 3 parts reducer & 1 part hardener.

You should be able to find the correct hardener & reducer at any autobody supplier who carries PPG products.

Due to "VOC" limitations the vender in Ottawa has stopped selling acrylic paint. Theyre all urethane paints, with urethane reducers.

Anyone ever mix?

Did some google research, and found that it's permitted to use a urethane reducer with a Acrylic Enamel.

Enamel will dry without the hardener, but it takes up to 30 days for the oxidation process to happen. Hardener speeds up the process to 3-5 days. If enamel with no hardener is subjected to any sort of polishing procedure before the binder oxidizes, the paint rolls up in big chunks instead of smoothing out.

Lacquer paint is simply pigment and solvent, without an oxidizing binder, and can be polished and/or color-sanded as soon as the solvent dries out, usually 12 hours or less. Alkyd enamel, acrylic, and the most recent synthetic paint, urethane, requires at least a few days of drying/oxidizing time before any sort of finishing process is attempted.

Jerry - there should be an iPhone app named the Hotrod App - I would ask it a question and it would provide an answer instantly.

At $1 an app - you would make a killing!

Did you mix or reduce the paint?

Thanks! Yes, I used a urethane reducer and universal hardener. (4, 1, 1 as per the tech sheet when using urethane reducers instead of acrylic) 3 light coats, it went on very evenly, I'm very happy with it!
