Got rear wheels off of ground, start with shifter at neutral, rear wheels turn. Which linkage needs adjusting?
That Pertronix unit I installed works as advertised. Jimbar

1954 Chevrolet truck Hydra-Matic transmission

1954 Servicing the Chevrolet Truck Hydra-Matic Transmission - Part 1 - Maintenance and Adjustments

Have you disconnected and re-connected the linkage? If not, you might get by with just a few adjustments.

I'd start with the adjustment at the bottom of this page - special tools are needed for earlier adjustments in this booklet. NOTE: this adjustment is quite sensitive - change it just a little for large differences in shift-points.

If the wheels turning when jacked up is your only concern, don't adjust anything. That's not uncommon, due to the fluid transmitting a little torque when the weight of the vehicle isn't on the wheels. It was pretty common for the vehicle to lurch forward a little on cold startup. Once the fluid warms up, the forward creep in neutral goes away. The 1-2 shift point on a Hydramatic happens almost as soon as the vehicle starts moving, maybe 5-8 MPH. This is also normal. Since it has a fluid coupling, not a torque converter, a very low-ratio 1st. gear was required for good performance when pulling away from a stop. The shifts are very firm, also. It's better to have a firm shift- - - -a mushy, slippy shift wears out clutches in a hurry.

No, I never did take the linkage loose anywhere except the carburetor. As a matter of fact, I think it ran a little better when I set the emergency brake and stopped the wheels. Maybe my imagination due to being jet engine deaf. Thanks. Jimbar
