Were oil filters standard or an option in 1946. My COE has a filter mounted on the firewall but it isn't hooked up. I was thinking about leaving it that way. If the truck sees 100 miles per year I'd be surprised.

I just added a photo of my system. They were aftermarket and mine was on the firewall too. I have a 1/2 ton 46. The company that rebuilt my engine warned me to make sure the oil line is restricted becuase you will loose pressure to the rocker arms. The trucks were not designed for the filters. I used 1/8 copper lines. I am worried they will plug. Time will tell.

Jason,
Take a look at this Tech Tip:
http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/engines/oil%20filters/index.html
I believe you have the S-2 filter. See Image 17 & 18.
Instruction Sheets are at the end of the page.
Here is the S-2:

Good luck with your truck.

I have a full pressure 235 (1954), my filter is an s2. If I have a full pressure system would I still need to restrict it. Just wondering. I still think I'm going to leave it without but good to know if I hook it up at a later date.

If you have the normal 1954 lubrication system (that has not been converted to full flow), you would use a by-pass oil filter. No additional restriction is necessary if you you an AC S2 by-pass oil filter.

even though they only filter a small percentage of the oil, they do take out an incredible amount of junk. It wouldn't hurt to hook it up.

I believe the return (to motor) comes out of the middle opening in your filter There should be a plug in the side of the motor for this. One of the other 2 holes is for the input from the pump where your oil pressure gauge is connected. There has to be a "T" installed to accommodate both lines (one to the filter & one to the gauge). The other opening on your filter is for a threaded plug so you can drain & clean the filter when you change oil.
Take a good look at this & you will see how the oil flows into the filter canister, through the filter element, into the center tube and out the filter canister back into the motor.
