Every day, I drive to work at 2:30 in the afternoon and my temp gauge is right where it should be. Every day, I drive home from work at 11:30 at night and my temp gauge is close to being pegged on the hot side. Every day for the last few weeks it's been like this. There's no evidence of things actually overheating.
The only thing that's different when I drive home is my lights are on 'cause it's night. This afternoon on the way to work I turned my headlights on to see what would happen. Gauge was right where it should be. Hmmmm... | | |

My guess was that turning on the headlights was pulling the voltage down, thus affecting the electric sender circuit. That of course is assuming you have an electrical sender. But since it is not doing it during the day, I am currently stumped. | | |

This is a longshot, but if you have a fan clutch the temperature control in the clutch could be effecting the turning of the fan between the day time outside temp and the night time temp. This is the only thing that comes to mind. If you don't have a fan clutch, try a new sending unit on the engine. Otherwise, I'm baffled, too.

I'd suggest getting one of those infra-red temp checkers, like we use for tire temps on the race track, and doing a little testing at the thermostat housing or radiator top tank while the problem is happening. I'm betting you're having a gauge problem, not an actual overheating situation. The tire temp probes we use at the track register from below zero to 400 degrees F., and cost about 50 bucks. Well worth it, for any tool box. Just point and click, and the electronic readout comes up in about one second.

Turn on the lights and the temp pegged, the oil pressure dropped to zero, when the wipers were on the dash lights increased/decreased in brightness in sysnc with the movement of the wipers. Tried troubleshooting -- ended up just getting a manual and rewiring everything under the dash -- in process found a faulty ground. If you have an electrical diagram look for any commonslities between temp sensor and light circuits. | | |

One of your previous posts I would recommend undoing everything you did at that time and start fresh.

If things were behaving funny right after I did the HEI conversion than I would've put 2+2 together. But everything was perfectly fine for a month and a half. Then one day a couple weeks ago...
Actually, the temp gauge for the last week has been working, uh, mostly normal.
I'm still gonna put the new temp sender in and see what happens. Already bought it, just haven't installed. | | |
