The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Fuel Filter

Hope this isn’t too much of a basic question but when I bought my truck a previous owner put a fuel filter on it between the tank and the fuel pump. I also have one between the pump and carburetor. I need to change the filter that is between the tank and the pump.

Do I need to disconnect the line at the sending unit? Or can I equalize the pressure by just taking off the gas cap so the gas isn't sucked down into the line? Not sure how to proceed. Best case scenario I would only want to drain the gas that is already in the line. I have this fear of having jugs of gas all over the garage.

the gas cap is vented, there is no "pressure" involved, the gas could siphon regardless .... you could open the line at the sender, or you could have everything ready, including a pan to catch the gas, remove and replace the filter as quick as you can, not likely to get more than a cup or so out if you're not too fumble fingered if there's a long enough rubber line before the filter you could also clamp it there while you work

Also, if you got a rubber line, you can shove a pencil in the end to stem the flow.

I take the line loose going into the filter & blow some air in it to break the siphon efect. I take or loosen the gas cap first.

you could just drive it till you "run out of gas" change the filter, call the wife and have her bring you a couple of gallons ,but not on Mother's Day though.
