You can tell by the vent slots where the black blow-by has marked the cover. 235/261's used that basic cover from 54-62 with only miner changes.

| | | | | Joined: Jul 2003 Posts: 85 Member | | Member Joined: Jul 2003 Posts: 85 | there was the option on the big trucks of getting a 235 as early as the 42-46 models (got my chevy restoration guide and it has the toque curves and everything) since this is a 2-ton, being a 47 does not preclude it from having a 235...
that siad, I have no idea if that is or is not what those motors look like from that time.
-Mike R. | | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | That early 235 was a splasher like the 216, not a full pressure system like the later 235. I think it had the tall side cover like the 216 also. Visually I think it looked just like a 216. | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,746 24601 | | 24601 Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,746 | There does seem to be some confusion on the subject of the pre-54 splasher 235's in the big trucks. It sure would be cool if someone who had one, and it was correct, could send me a bunch of photos so I could make a page for it on the site.
I have a big truck ('49 4400) and someday it would be cool to find a splasher 235 to make it 100 percent.
Thanks, John

I took this engine out of a 1951 3/4-ton thinking it was a 216. When the mechanic tore the engine apart and took measurements it spec'd out to a 235. Apparently a PO replaced the 216 with this 235. Externally this engine looks just like a 216. The 216 was the Thriftmaster and the 235 was the Loadmaster. The 216 was for the 1/2, 3/4 and 1-tons. The 235 was for the 1-1/2-ton, 2-ton and the Forward Control models.
I replaced the Babbitt bearings with insert bearings.

I had a completely original one family owned 4100 that had the venerable 216 in it. I researched the old Chevy literature, and it said that the 235 dipper was optional for the 4000 series and standard equipment for the 6000s. Hope this helps. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 69 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 69 | my 235 in the 53 has a valve cover larger than and nothing like the one in the above pic, hmm...
mines got like some raised lines grid pattern at the ends and one nut on direct towards both ends of the top of the valve cover. has vents for breathing and also road draft tube pass side.
for some reason it looks taller than a 235 should, also runs "meaner" especially at a hot fast idle, the way the fan and exhaust sound just make it seem that way anyways
