Done a few times and can't seem to get a smooth finish. I am using a metallic color. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks to all for your input.

Are you allowing the primer to flash or dry long enough before covering it? Are you applying the paint too thick?
All those issues can cause problems similar to what you describe.
