I have an automatic on the column.
New shifter rod,
New shifter knob,
And don't want to destroy the new parts. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Assuming it's a stock plastic knob, soak the knob in hot water to soften the plastic. Than take a rubber mallet and hammer it into place.
I did mine in the '72 without soaking, but I imagine letting the plastic get hot and soft will help matters.

Turns out it follows aftermarket practice. The hole in the knob was not drilled all the way through at the correct size. It never would have gone on.
Once I drilled the hole to the proper depth and size I put the knob on as far as it would go and then put it in hot (140 degrees) water for about 5 minutes. It then went on with a few smacks of my mallet.
By the way I did not dunk the knob all the way in the water. Only up to the lip. I did not want it to fill up with water. | | |
