Am rewiring my 37Chev 1/2 Ton - keeping it 6 volts - will be adding headlight relays as every one I talk to say that - that 6 volt head lights are only slightly better than candles. Some information I have read advises that the relays should be as close to the lights as possible.
Is this correct, or could the relays be mounted on back on engine side of the fire wall?

The firewall should be fine, just use sufficiently heavy wire to connect the relays to the headlights. The wire is going to have to be of a certain length to get from the power source to the lights anyway, it shouldn't matter much if the relay is closer to the light or the source, or right in the middle. The idea is to get a more direct source of power and to keep all of that current out of the dashboard area.

Here's what I did on my 1971 C-10 when I rewired the engine compartment. This mount is between the inner fender and the fender lip right behind the battery.

thanks have now got that done, one more query - should I run 2 wires from the relay one for each headligh or is it OK to run one wire to a headlight then from one headlight to another

Either way works fine. I redid the taillights in my Corvette in the style you described.
