The Kansas Kustom manifolds are well made and reasonably priced. Smithy's blue mufflers come in 3 lengths. In my opinion the middle length muffler sounds the best, 30's are too long for the traditional sound. You will also get different Smith's sounds if you turn the mufflers around. If you want the triditional 6 cyl rap sound do not install a crossover. If you want it quieter use a cross over. The best place to put in a crossover is just past the crossmember where the brake line crosses over. I've also noticed that the cross over will help hold up the pipes if you ever have to take the Manifolds off. On your question about gas mileage: watch the size of your pipes from the manifolds to the mufflers, 2" or 2+1/2 inch pipe will give you less backpressure and also less mileage. Your engine needs a little backpressure. Its hard to find but look for nothing larger than 1+5/8 or 7/8th from the manifolds to the mufflers. From the muffler back you can use 2" or larger. Some research and google search under "header design" will give you some more background. Have fun.

I wanted to use the Smithy's, but didn't want the fuss of mail ordering them, so I went with a set of 24" glass packs from the local muffler shop and 2" pipes all the way back. It has a nice sound at idle, and just tooling around, but when you open the throttle wide at around 2000 rpm's, look out. She really talks. I can't say much about performance, because I installed them at the same time I installed the rebuilt 235. My pipe crosses over under the tailshaft of the transmission. The transmission drain plug misses the pipe, and also the u-joint ball. If you would need it, I could see about taking a picture, just let me know.

You gain some power and milage with the split and some more with glasspacks. California Bill said it is worth 10 hp compared to the stock (stuffed) muffler and exhaus system.
I have two cherry bombs that are a bit loud but sound sweet like a WW2 fighter plane is riding the rear bumper ;-)
I would prefer Smithy's, but it`s hard to get them over here.
Paint the pipes with cheap paint (spray can) and drive around for half an hour. Place the crossover where the paint is not burned away.

Long and short, crossovers change the sound and can improve the breathing at certain RPMs, depending on type and location. The exhaust moving at the crossover can help pull exhaust out of the next cylinder (improved scavanging I think it's called).

Even though nobody asked, here is a link to a few pics of my dual set-up with manifold from Kansas Kustoms. My duals I just want to show them off.
