Just wondering what, if any, the GMC engine from the late fifties share bellhousing patterns with. Are the GMC engine bellhousing bolt patterns the same as a Chevy? Someone told me that the later model GM engine (250, 292) wilt bolt in?
Here's the deal. I'm offered a nice old '57 GMC 2 ton with a 12' dump body. I belive it has a 270 straight 6, but it has a rod through the block. What would be the easiest way to get it back under it's own power?

LOL I don't see why a GMC and chevy wouldn't interchange. . .I pulled a 265 of a chevy truck and dropped a 351E-V6 right in bolted up. .. . and with some help from a battery saws all and batery drill a fabbed some make shift mount's got it running got 450 mile's home. . .

You can use any 235/261 full pressure, or the 228/248/270/302 (best choice) as a virual bolt in using the existing bellhousing. The Chevy front mounts are different due to the length difference in the engines (GMC is longer).
A later 6 can be made to fit, but will require fabbing up side mounts for the block, and the bellhousing will have to be swapped out for a Chevy V8 bellhousing from '55-'66 with the crossmember mounts.

The only thing I noticed was there was an extra alignment stud on the back of the gmc block and I needed to add a hole to the bellhousing. Not sure why the stud was there...
Gmc engines are pretty common, why not look for another 270 to toss back in it? | | |

If you want to switch to a Chevy engine, just get a Chevy bellhousing out of Chevy's version of your truck and bolt it right up.
GMC straight six bellhousings match up with Chevy straight six bellhousings of the same decade.
GMC V8 bellhousings of the '50s match up with Buick, Olds, and Pontiac bellhousings of the '50s.
