Does anyone have a great idea for a stereo system for a 1952 Chevy. I will be using the stock radio placement. I want to be able to use IPOD or USB input.

I've seen dual speakers for the stock location and am considering kick panel speakers. What about under seat speakers?

Any recommendations??? I am open to all suggestions.

I think you will find the stereo speakers in the stock location to be a wasted effort. For real stereo you need some separation.

PS: I would prefer a stereo that looks like original, but has IPOD/ USB capability, If I'm not asking too much.

Kevin - I have just finished installing a hidden custom stereo under the front seat of my 1950 3100 (lots of room). I did not want to remove the working original radio in the dash. The unit has ipod,sirus,6 cd changer,Usb and aux booster cables on the unit. The stereo is run by a remote that is totally wireless and has a display on the remote face. Remote is Rf style that needs no point to point direct line of site to run. It actually runs from 40' away in another room. I was getting ready to write a story with pictures but have not been able to get the seat back in to see how it sounds then (just had my hip replaced and I am a little slowed.) It sounds great right now and am really pleased. I have 482 songs on my flash drive and the remote will show and play them. Speakers are boxed units from the sane company. 8" woofers and two tweeters in each unit. Had carpet under seat so I was able to mount everything using velcro. I can send you some pictures if you like. Same company makes the original looking units with all the hook ups but this was easy to install. Just need to get the seat installed to see the quality of the sound. One thing I did was hooked the speakers under the seat to the rear wires so I could add front units later if necessary and I could over drive the underseat units if they are muffeled too much to balance. I purchased the unit thru Classic Auto Sound . Dennis is in Wisconson and a dealer for Custom Auto sound . They are in Calofornia. Here are Pictures of the stereo, speaker, wiring, and remote.

Another company Retro Sound make a unique unit with features for many instalations. They show an USB and SD card reader also.

I am unable to get the seat back by myself. Not supposed to be doing lifting (after hip replaced). I need to get some friends over and replace seat. Then I will be able to see how they work or are muffled. They sound great now on vol. at 15, ran it up to 40 with no distortion. But true test is with the seat back on as the area underneath on these trucks is not wide open. Should be getting help this weekend. I will let you know. Tom

Well I talked a couple guys at the coffee shop to assist with the seat install and its done. I got the stereo running and noticed it muffled somewhat. I had to lower the base setting to -3 and increase volume level from 14 to 28 (40+ is high). Sound great and I will not need any more speakers. Drove down the road for a ride and I am very happy - very. Did find that the wireless remote does need to be recharged regularly. Tom

I used the hidden type stereo as well but my speakers are in the original location behind the dash grill (www.ClassicParts.com Item #69-831) Stereo/speakers work great and you can plug any modern device known into it. The small readout/control head I mounted between my sunvisors. I also went with a hidden antennae that was installed with adhesive to my bed wood (sunny days only truck).

Hello,

I did this in 1978 just to be able to run a 12 volt 100 watt stereo power amplifier and AM/FM cassette head unit.

You will have to read halfway done the post to get to the stereo stuff.

This is a POST about adding 12 volts to a
6 volt vehicle without converting the whole
vehicles electrical system to 12 volts. While sharing the same ground.

Now only if Bigtonka could incorporate a pre-amplfier output in the 1949 radio you could send a low voltage
audio signal into the 12 volt power amplifier and still keep the original 6 volt amplifier and speaker as a mono center channel.

Thanks
