The issue is that this motor looks like a 250 with the shorter deck height and right motor mount. Did GM build a short deck 292? There is no mistake on the casting number. Anyone have an idea? Thank you!

The Inliner.org Casting number guide shows 3788378 as being a 292. I had found a long block dumped on the side of the road. I checked the casting number against the guide there it was supposedly a 292. Then went to the trouble of having the boss pick it up with the front end loader on the tractor. When I got it home an started comparing it with my 292, decided it couldn't be. I have since scrapped it and don't have the casting number written down any where to say it's the same number.

Evidently there are not that many (official, original) sources and everyone uses least expensive or free version. If you look on that auction site you will find quite a few versions. It would be interesting to learn the real story.

I already know that most 292s have a taller deck height and that really isn't my question. Does anyone know for a fact that the information regarding the casting number is wrong? Hard to believe a casting number would be off, a stamping I would find easier but a block casting? Never seen a casting number be wrong before. The motor is in good shape- a good runner not needing rebuilt.

Most working mechanics have seen mistakes in factory shop manuals, Motor's manuals, whatever. Doug
