The issue is that this motor looks like a 250 with the shorter deck height and right motor mount. Did GM build a short deck 292? There is no mistake on the casting number. Anyone have an idea? The Inliner.org Casting number guide shows 3788378 as being a 292. I had found a long block dumped on the side of the road. I checked the casting number against the guide there it was supposedly a 292. Then went to the trouble of having the boss pick it up with the front end loader on the tractor. When I got it home an started comparing it with my 292, decided it couldn't be. I have since scrapped it and don't have the casting number written down any where to say it's the same number.

a 292 has 2 each 6'' covers.
it also has offset side motor mounts, intake/exh on the drivers side, dist between
first & second hole on pass side, spin on oil filter below hole 1 among others.
&

Evidently there are not that many (official, original) sources and everyone uses least expensive or free version. If you look on that auction site you will find quite a few versions. It would be interesting to learn the real story.

I already know that most 292s have a taller deck height and that really isn't my question. Does anyone know for a fact that the information regarding the casting number is wrong? Hard to believe a casting number would be off, a stamping I would find easier but a block casting? Never seen a casting number be wrong before. The motor is in good shape- a good runner not needing rebuilt. | | |

Most working mechanics have seen mistakes in factory shop manuals, Motor's manuals, whatever. Doug | | |

Earlier ones had 1".
