I have a 3/4 ton Chevy 54 truck and bought fiberglass running boards. My plan is to use epoxy primer but am not sure what to use for the top coat. I am using a blue metalic Diamont topcoat on the truck. Will that work on the running boards? I am worried about stepping on it and grinding it off. I could use a black paint? Any suggestions?

Not sure what will work best for paint on the fiberglass but you may want to consider step plates whatever you use. I like mine and I think they give people the idea oh yeah step on here.

Any paint that's good enough for your hood is good enough for the running boards, a step plate may be a good idea. I you are going to have shoe with rocks and mudd stuck to the bottom of them, then yes it is going to get scratched When the running boards were painted on my truck we did 2 things to help hide any scratche - 1- I sprayed 3m undercoating 08881 on all surfaces, yep even the top, it gave the top coat a slight texture. 2-Since I sprayed a basecoat/clearcoat I added flatner to the final clearcoat to help hide any scratches.
