All the way counter clockwise is lock. The key can be removed and the ignition is locked. (Tang to the right) Center position is off and the key can be removed. In this position the switch can be turned clockwise to on with or without the key. (Tang to the left) | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | the old switches commonly get where you can turn them with a screwdriver or knife tip, only "faulty" in that they don't lock, they'll still function properly electrically .... the ignition lock with the thumb tabs could also possibly be a type that requires a key to go left to a fully locked position while allowing the thumb tabs to move it to the other position[s] .... yes, OFF is all the way counterclockwise, ON is the first position clockwise, and if it was a key start rather than a foot start, the 3rd position clockwise would be 'momentary' start [but spring loaded]

The last owner or last to work on this put in a solenoid starter and ran 2 10 gage wires to a push button bolted through the cigarette lighter hole. I plan to return it to a foot starter. Just trying to keep from buying a new ignition switch if I don't have to.
red58, I think you may be right.
cletis, That's the way mine appears to be working. Don't know for certain without a key. Maybe I just need to remove the ignition and have a key made.
