I have a buddy who is restoring a 66, however in the process he ruined the vin tag that goes above the drivers door, apparently when you have the cab acid dipped they dont hold up to good. I see you can buy replacements for some chevy muscle cars and even the early 50 s trucks. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas.

I have an excellent source for this issue. Hit me with a PM, e-mail or phone call and I will shed some light on the situation. Have a great day.

you can't buy replacement vin tags legally unless it is with the MVB and they will reassign new nbrs

I Talked to a patrolman about it and he told me that if I could get a replacement tag getting the original numbers would not be a problem but he still has what is left of the original tag to which is not much.

I am not arguing with you about it. go into the MVO and ask them. most places it is even against the law to even remove the tag and put it back on.If the MVO has it on it's statutes then it will be legal to so. what one patrolman says may not be what another will do
some states have different ways of doing things. most times these things will never effect you , but the next owner goes to do something and this is where the vin# problems show up. There are lots that don't care about the next person though.

If it is a chev the matching vin # is stamped in the frame. there is a good chance they may want to see that also

Im not arguing with anyone, I just want my buddy to get the situation figured out now so he does not have any major problems once he gets the project all done. My brother had a early 80's chevy truck reinspected and stamped in 91. When that was done they actually stamped new numbers in the cab and frame. I think what they are getting at with this 66 was trying to locate a vin plate that they could stamp and put back in the original location because my brothers truck looked kind of [censored] when they put the new numbers in it.

The complete VIN is not stamped on the frame...just the last eight characters.

rodwst, you have a PM.
