The thing is though that it goes into the transmission and doesn't go toward the rear end. I have yet to take the transmission apart yet so I don't want it is attached indside the transmission. Any help indentifying it would be helpful. | | |

Wouldn't that be the reverse lock-out lever...pretty common on that old transmission.

Stuart pegged it. You pull up on that lever to shift to reverse. Ther is a little spring under it that returns it but it is usually broken by now.

This means three forward speeds and one reverse, and as Grigg notes, the lever prevents the driver from inadvertently putting the tranny in reverse as he cruises into town for Goat feed and a six pack of Red Tail Ale.  The operator must lift the lock-out lever or the stick won't go into reverse. Stuart | | |

Now I'm not sure! I know the gallery notes on this rig indicate it's a three speed, but don't know if they have discounted granny as being a gear.
The only info I can find for a transmission of this vintage, with the lock-out mechanism, is for a truck 4 speed! I better keep my trap shut on this one.

Also I went home this weekend and since the transmission is just laying on the floor in the shop currently i placed into different gears and all gears go forward hence it must be a four speed but likewise I couldn't get the thing to go in reverse? So now I totally confused. | | |

Reverse should be found by pulling up on the reverse lock out, and shifting the transmission into what would normally have been the location of second gear. | | |

I got one of those setups on my 1940. I still haven't figured out how to drive the bloody thing. | | |
