i got a 46 2 ton that has a sm420 trans in it
the one that was in it sounded like a phantom
jet engine found another in a old junk yard it sounds much better my question is were these trannys
always a little noisy? philip

Mine whines a bit in granny and reverse but beyond that it is relatively quiet. And it's a 1/2 ton. I also covered my floor with dynomat. I'm sure that helps. grin

I don't think that a '46 would have the SM420, it didn't come out 'till mid-'47. You should have the staight cut gear 4 speed, with the reverse lock out lever on the shifter. That one will howl due to the way the gears are cut.

its a sm420 someone must have swapped it out.

I've done the swap on my 46 1 ton. Not really too hard and the original bell housing in your year might be more compatible than later years.

My SM 420 runs quiet and smooth, no whines. There is a lot of info available on rebuilding these things and parts are not real hard to find. They are also easy to rebuild if you are so inclined.
