I know this has been discussed before but I can't remember if there is such a thing as crimping the return oil line from the rocker arm assembly too much. On my 248 the tube is about as big as my little finger, which is much larger than the photos that I've seen posted from other engines when this topic is debated. I just don't want to do too much to the line because of lack of a source for a replacement if I do get too western with it. I'm just trying to get a little more oil to the rockers, no such thing as too much for them, is there?

..I'll give it a shot. This old engines never did have an abundance of oil. If you'd like to crimp it a little I think you'd be ok as long as "sufficent" oil available.
Not sure about your 248 but I have seen the tube your speaking of in a vendors catalog... but don't remember which one. Take the to check out several of the vendors...or call them.

Thanks, I crimped it closed about 75% and the rockers are getting real good oil all the way up and down the shaft. Still a lot of oil coming out the tube and straight down into the head, but I was a little nervous before I did it, thanks again.

Ok, now did I go too far? After crimping the return line everything up top was oiling great, did some crusing around town and things seemed fine. All the rockers were oiling but not spashing around. It would idle without valve cover and not slosh oil out on the engine. I made my first highway run yesterday, since the rebuild and she ran great, but..... the oil pressure never left 60 lbs while at 55-60 mph. At idle pressure is at 30 lbs. Did I over do the crimp? Will I be in for trouble with oil pressure that high at highway speed? Pressure goes to 60lbs at about 1000 rpm and only comes down between shifts and at idle. Sigh... You failed to mention what your pressure was before you crimped the line a little. To me I don't think what you did should effect the oil pressure very much??
Give us some more info...and no, I personally don't think 60 lbs is to much especially on a new rebuilt motor.

Maybe someone else will chime in here. Jerry??

after my rebuild on a 270 i had 60 pounds going down the road. at idle when hot was running 30. the oil pump was from the 248 i had replaced. now it runs 50-60/25-30 depending on the temp.

After a couple of other short highway trips the oil pressure is about where 51 ashton is reporting. I swear that since I've got this thing running again all I hear is strange noises and smell new smells. Can't wait to get the "new" broke in so I can just drive it. Thanks for all the responses.
