Can I please get some help instructing me in testing a starter. It's out of the truck and I would like to see if it works. I just need to know how to run the wires. Thanks.

The item in your pictue is not a stomp starter- - - -it's got a solenoid on it. Connect the big yellow cable to the battery + terminal, and ground the other battery post to the starter housing. Jumper cables will work well for that. Then touch the small black wire to the terminal where the yellow cable attaches. The starter pinion gear will snap out into the nose cone and the armature will spin with enough torque to try to rotate the starter housing, so it's best to have it clamped in a vise before making any connections.

Okay, So that didn't work. But if its not a stomp starter then what is the plunger for on the back of the solenoid?

Also the box of parts this starter came in has the stomper link and button??

I'll post a pic of it next.

the "plunger" is activated by the solenoid it's connected to - someone replace the original foot operated starter with a key operated one and saved you the un-needed parts

not sure how to post a picture on here but if you look at ebay item 270924978519 that is a "stomp" starter.

Maybe I should restor my stomp starter if I'll get that much for it hahaha And to think it was just going to the scrap yard. Guess I should test it and see if it's still good after sitting for 15yrs.

Yes, it will fit your GMC. There were differences in the GMC starter and the Chevy starter but most folks never know about them . The GMC starters actually had a slightly different shift lever called a "split lever". This different shift lever caused the cast iron drive end housing to be different. Both starter had the same armature, coils, drive and switch but different housings. However, they are both completely interchangeable with one another. The housing is only different where the shift lever is involved. Again, they are interchangeable even though Delco would have issued different part numbers for both starters. Even though I know all this, I cant for the life of me tell you why GMC, Chevy, Delco, felt the need to make two different shift levers and housings for the trucks back then when internal parts were all the same and mounting was the same.

Could it have had something to do with positive and negative ground and being able to immediately tell the difference?

No, pos. and neg. ground made no difference to the starter. It would work either way.

That thing looks like it's been underwater for a few years! The first thing I'd suggest is to get about 5 pounds of rust off everything!
