Could the harmonic balancer be causing the noise?When I re-installed the balancer after the rebuild, I just placed it over the key, whacked it a few times with a hammer as far as it would go, and that was the end of story. I'm wondering if it could have loosend up somehow, and if so, would it mimic a main bearing noise?

As far as putting it on I like to set it on a hotplate for a few minutes and then the only install tool you need is a pair of oven mitts.

The rubber could be broken between the outer ring causing a noise. Grab it & check for any looseness.

#82830 09/12/2007 12:50 AM | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 | is it the old original balancer? mabey it needs replaced regardless of how you installed it. i made a brass driver to install the 250/292 ones. i had a instalation tool beak off in the crank on the tapped end on a 292. as long as they are driven on straight and only connecting with the inner portion the instillation should be ok. i have used a brass drift alternating it around but made a specific brass driver to connect all the way around and be sure to drive on straight. hey curt is the hotplate hard on the rubber ring at all. i have heard of heating them but always a little afraid to myself. hr | | |

Another thing to keep in mind when installing the harmonic dampner is belt alignment. While it probably won't make the noise you hear, a mis-aligned belt will wear quickly and may come off while the engine is running. You need to use a straight edge when installing the balancer to make sure the alignement is correct.
