Need a quick review. I recall 63-64 rear bumper will not work for 62. Not sure why or if there is a combination of brackets and bumpers that will work. Any guidance?

The frame rails of the '60-'62 light-duty Chevy trucks are wider than their '63-'66 counterparts, which are narrower, therefore the mounting hardware holes are not the correct spacing.

Shoot! I drug a 62 C30 stepside rear bumper home from the salvage yard and planned to put it on my 65 C10 1/2T stepside. Is it gonna work if I use the correct brackets for a 65 stepside?

I had asked this same question in an earlier post but nobody would bother to measure the distance between their 2 center and 2 outer bumper bolt holes on their 63-66 stepside bumper.

The stock brackets won't work but you could modify the brackets or make some new ones.

Hey Lugnutz. I just went out and measured the back of my 66GMC stepside. The holes on the outside are 15" apart and the the distance spaced across the frame from the inside bolt of one side to the other is 31". I hope that helps if not let me know and I'll do some more measuring. Larry

**EDIT - I get the same measurements (well I actually got 31.25" between the 2 inner bolts). It appears to me that the 62 stepside rear bumper actually IS the same as the 63 - 66 stepside bumpers. The bumper brackets are different for the 62 because the frame is wider. Since I have a set of correct rear brackets for a 65 stepside, I should be able to bolt it right on. That makes me VERY HAPPY!

My apology to Hambone for sorta highjacking this thread, although I did not change the subject matter. Well maybe a little change from fleetside to stepside.

Anyway, would anyone be kind enough to measure their bumper bolt distances for a fleetside rear bumper? I am sure that other folks would be curious if the location of the holes is the same or not. Maybe all Chevy/GMC did from 62 to 63 was change the brackets to accomodate the change in frame width.

The brackets were changed on the stepsides, so the rear sport bumpers were interchangeable between the '60-'66 trucks and the brackets & hole spacing were changed on the fleetside rear bumpers, so the '60-'62 are the same and the '63-'66 are the same, but not interchangeable between the years.

Back on the bumper subject - Will 63-66 fleetside bumper work on the same year suburban? I understand the brackets might be different but how about the bumper.

The rear bumper on the fleet-side trucks, will not work on the rear of the Suburbans or Panels of the same year, due to the drop-down center of the fleet-side rear sport bumper, for the license plate, interfering with the rear splash pan valance on the Panels & Suburbans.

Additionally, the factory rear frame horns on the trucks are squared off & the frame horns on the Panels & Suburbans are formed. The rear sport bumpers on the trucks, with the drop-down center, require four mounting brackets and have four holes in the face of the bumper, whereas the rear sport bumper for the Panels & Suburbans, do not have the drop-down center & they only require only the two outside mounting brackets, but the bumper has six mounting holes in the face, one on either end & two pairs of holes at the frame rails locations.

The rear sport bumpers on the Panels & Suburbans are mounted in a similar configuration as the front bumpers of the trucks, Panels & Suburbans.
