I have a 39 chevy 1/2 ton I'm restoring and the engine that was in the truck was not original , I've gotten a. Replacement engine but had no carb, the non original engine had a carter Y1 carb... Can anyone tell me what the difference is from a carter w1 to a carter Y1??

The Carter W1 came on practically all the Stovebolts from the early 30,s through 49. It was used as a replacement after that. The YF Carter carb was used as a replacement mostly for 235 engines. The W1 used a piston type accel. pump while the YF used a diaprahm. The 216 & 235 have different mounting spacings so the carbs are not interchangeable. I like the W1 best myself but the repair kit has to come from a specialty supplier. The parts stores don't list them.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

You can get a rebuild kit from thecaruratorshop.com. I posted my complete tear down here.

For cleaning my parts I used an automotive paint gun cleaner, works much faster and cheaper than methylene cloride, except the iron I soaked in lime away for about a week.

The W-1 was the midrange model of Carter's second generation of single barrel downdraft carburetors. 128 different were produced, including many for Chevrolet 1932~1949:

The YF was the top of the line in Carter's third generation of single barrel downdraft carburetors, beginning in 1950 and carrying through the mid-1980's.

The YF is somewhat technologically superior to the W-1. However, the YF's diaphragm type accelerator pump can give issues when used with ethanol based fuel where the vehicle is not a daily driver.

Carter produced literally hundreds of different type YF carburetors. Searching the archives on this forum will yield a listing I posted of those produced for Chevrolet (both original equipment and aftermarket).

As to parts:

W-1 repair kits and other parts are easily obtained from specialty vendors.

Generic (one size fits none) YF repair kits are available from FLAPS, and some specialty vendors. Other specialty vendors carry repair kits and most other parts for specific YF models.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.
