what exactly would you like to know?

Here are a couple of pictures of the water pumps from my 1950 216 which would be the
same as your ‘53 Vince.

DENNY, THE WATER PUMP THAT I TOOK OFF MY 1953 ,216 ENGINE HAS THE SAME PART NUMBER 839403 ,HOWEVER IT HAS GM33 ISTEAD OF GM7.I ORDERED A REBUILT GM AND IT CAME WITH THE NUMBER GM7 JUST LIKE THE ONE YOU SHOW,DO YOU KNOW WHY THE DIFFERENT #S ALTHOUGH SAME PART #?THANK YOU,VINCE

Denny or somebody will probably respond soon. But I think the GM33 or GM7 identifies the casting plant where the pump housing was cast...as GM had many factories making parts, etc.

Can't say for sure, but that would be my guess also since the raised number is a casting number.
Here are the head casting numbers of a couple of our members, you can clearly see
the GM5 and GM14 numbers on them also.

Verify this part number but I believe it also fits your 1953.

Thanks, Harold. That 5/8" groove pump will work for several years (Jim Carter says 1941-52).

I do not know if 1953 used the 5/8" or the 3/8" pulley-groove. NAPA says 5/8" for 1953.

NAPA also has the 54/55 3/8" groove water pump for a little higher price, ~$69.00 plus core.

According to the Chevrolet Master Parts Catalog, 53-54 used the 3/8" pulley.

Denny,here is another 1956 car 235 head I have.It has a GM19 on it and I have seen them with GM28,it's probably a date code.

Thanks Tim, we just don't know do we. But with all the numbers that are showing up it
doesn't seem possible that there would be that many casting plants so you may be right
about it being a date code. The 913 head on my '54 is coded GM10, so yet another.


But, we better watch it, for fear that we veer to far off subject and the thread Nazi's jump
on our case.

I do not think that is a date casting code. Here is the location of the date casting code.
Do you have a code in that location?

You'll see that code on the right of this photo.

That GM10, GMXX code might be related to the "line" in the casting foundry? Someone at the VCCA discussion board should know?

Could it be a batch number ? or a mold number ?

Could have a variety of possible meanings, except it is not a date casting code. A VCCA expert would be the best bet for an explanation.

I wouldn't mind knowing what those GMxx numbers were because
they are on a lot of the castings that we see on the truck
parts. But, some of you know the relationship I have with the
VCCA so it's going to have to be up to someone else to dig that
out of them.
