I took the ole 3100 1/2T with original 216 and 3 on the tree out today. Reverse, 1st and 3rd shifted OK. Shifting in 2nd with clutch engaged produced tremendous GRINDING regardless of how many times and what speed I tried to engage this gear.

Does this mean it was getting stuck in the gearbox or at the linkages etc? It worked fine a few weeks ago, but I had to go back and fix the recent engine electrical / ignition problems.

I could shift in 1st easily, then bypass 2nd into 3rd and let her get up to speed without a problem, but shifting into 2nd with any momentum would cause a GRIND strange. I was doing to H-shaped shift pattern to ensure that I was enaging it cleanly.

Any ideas?????

I wonder if your clutch is not fully releasing? How much play do you have at the top of the pedal travel?

The synchros were the weakest point of those transmission. I would suspect you will have to drive it the way it is or rebuild the transmission. A little grinding really doesn't hurt anything. When they start jumping out of gear its high time to rebuild them.

Well, not planning on living with it. That is not exactly an option. Seems to have fixed itself. Took truck again and now it shifts into all gears OK now. I think it just needs more use. Still nervous driving the truck on busy roads but guess I will get used to it soon.

Thanks for the advice...
