I just read a thread from another website,from a guy that is thinking about adding an aftermarket oil-filter to his 235. I had that same idea,when I first purchased my '55 2nd Series 6500. The answer that I received from my mechanic was:"DEFINITELY NOT!!" Our trucks were designed to operate efficiently with regular oil- change intervals. Adding an aftermarket filter only filters about 10%,anyway, plus you have to drill holes in a perfectly good block to do so. If you don't remove all of the shavings, it would cause pre-mature engine wear/failure,which would be the reason for adding a filter in the first place! The optional/accessory by-pass canister oil filter will filter about 10% of the flow, the other 90% does not get filtered. Over time, all the oil gets filtered. The factory optional filter connects using existing ports in the block, T-ing off the guage fitting at the rear, and returning at a port near the center of the block. Any filtration will extend the life of your engine.

One advantage of this type of filter is that it needs no hoses.
The 55-2nd series engine referred-to in the first post has no oil distributor. Nonetheless, a by-pass canister filter will work with any year 216/235 and 54-57 261 engines.

If I were building an engine I'd for sure convert to full flow oil filter while I was at it.
