It is great to be here. You guys have already taught me so much. I am extremely new working on vehicles (never until now). I am lucky that my brother-in-law is very experienced. lol. So here is my story:

When I was about 10 years old (1980) my Dad (passed away in 1996) bought my new truck. We drove it around for about 6 months then he gave it to my Grandfather. My Grandfather drove it until he passed away in 2000. It was the very first vehicle I ever drove and boy was that a day. 3 on the tree is not a good place to start your driving experience but it is one you will never forget. Anyway I am in the Military and last year finally got stationed at home. I went to my Step-Brothers house and saw the truck sitting in the woods behind his house wasting away. Two days later I showed up with a buddies truck and trailer to get my truck. Long story shorter my Moms second husband and his son were unable to get the truck running and were getting ready to sell it for scrap metal.
About 4 months ago I got the truck to my Brother-in-laws house and we began troubleshooting. In the last 4 months we have done the following:
Replaced everything from the gas tank to the Rochester Carb
Rebuilt the Carb, replaced the water pump and thermostat
Replaced the points, plugs, and wires
Replaced the starter, coil, and battery
Resurfaced the intake and exhaust manifold
And changed the oil. not to bad for a novice. Now it will fire right up and run better than it did when I was a kid (guess it always had an exhaust leak).
Thank you guys for providing your knowledge and I have learned a lot from this site. I hope my children will have as much fun riding in the old truck as I did when I was little. Going to go get tags on her today and I recently purchased a 1952 North Carolina license plate to put on her.

Welcome John, better to drive it than to scrap it. Glad to see it running again. Be sure to ask if you have any questions.

Good luck.

Welcome to the Stovebolt,John. Being in N.C. also makes you a Southern Stovebolter. What part of N.C?? I'm just across from Spartanburg and not far from the N.C. line.

Read about the Southern Bolters in the Side Lot forum. Hope you can make the Reunion this year. 28th April.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile
