It is a 51 GMC 640 with a 4-71 detroit and a 5x3 trans. Full air brakes. It runs and moves but I noticed I had a coolant leak. once I started exploring the source of the leak I discovered it has a rusted off pipe that goes from the top rad hose housing to the lower one on the motor. So I took apart the coolant hoses for the top to try and find replacements and discovered I have a lot of rust inside the tubes. Anyone have an idea where I can find these pieces. If I need to I can post pics of the tubes I have off if needed. The rest of the pics are in my album if you guys want to see them.

Thanks
Brad

Congrats on the latest project!

If you put "Detroit Diesel" in the subject line and you'll get the right guys responding.

Thanks guys. I have been looking for one of these trucks for about a year and I bought this one and the seller never responded to my emails. Then out of the blue he calls and asks why I have not picked up the truck so I paid him and had it delivered. I am going to have to build some patch panels for the fenders but everything else is OK. Now if I can just find these coolant tubes all will be good. I figure Grigg will know where to look. jwdolin good luck on that cab as they are known to rust. I will keep an eye out though because I saw one of those trucks around here the other day, now if I can remember where.
Thanks
Brad

I believe the cab itself is the same as the smaller trucks. Things like fenders, grill, running boards and hoods are upsized for the big rigs. It wouldn't surprise me to find that the basic cab from a pickup or a 1 1/2 ton, etc. might interchange, or at least be adaptable.

Cool timing!

Bill & Wayne Alderson just finished their restoration of a '51 640. Theirs is a gasser, though. Still, you might enjoy the pictures of a gorgeous restoration

We're working up the Gallery page now.

WOW!, That Alderson truck is a "BEAUTY". I don't really care for the chrome stack, but at least it's not a large class 8 truck stack.

I like that Alderson truck and that is what I want mine to look like but mine will be white with red fenders and dual stacks. I may put all aluminum wheels on it too. On I have just got to get to work.
Thanks
Brad
