The lever adjusts back and forth. Was there any brackets on the outside of the truck where the cable would have connected to?

I think there originally was a mounting bracket that extended the signal out a bit further from the cab making the signal easier for the driver behind you to see. Signal pointed left for a LH turn then UP for a RH turn. Just my guess.

I don't think that JR's odd item is the remanents of a truck semaphore, unless it operated out an open window - need a much better picture to see detail
