can anyone tell me what engine I have. its a six cyl. and the oil filter is on the passenger side at the front of eng. it has electronic ignition but may have been added as after market. thanks for your help

need way more info than what modifications it has ... the add-on oil filter could be anywhere [but your P-bucket pics show it on the manifold, drivers side], and an electronic distributor would definitely be after market, in any early GM 6 cylinder ... what a 1950 should have is a 216, and it might have had a 235 swapped in if the mounts have been changed .... you need to get the casting numbers off the block and the number stamped on the pad beside the distributor [if any], then someone might be able to tell - also look for date codes cast on the block

Photo "djack5" is a high pressure 235 (or, maybe 261).

What paint did you use on your engine? That is a shade of gray that I like for many years of high-pressure 235s.

oldburbs, are you asking about the engine in your pictures or another engine? The 63 and later 194/215/230/250/292 engines have a spin-on oil filter on the passenger side near the front. The following link is to the GMC versions of these engines.

Post the block casting codes and the engine serial number and someone should be able to help you ID the size of the engine.

and 348675 GM these are on pass. side of eng.back of dist.thanks, dave

Look at the pictures on the 6066gmc page. The 230 and 250 look identical. The 292 has taller (6") side covers and the fuel pump is rear of the motor mount. Compare the pictures. It should be easy to eliminate or confirm the 292. If it is a 292 then you are a lucky guy. congrats!
As Tim suggested post the stamped serial number found on the little flat boss rear of the distributor. That and the casting number 348675 should pinpoint it. The A25 is a casting date: Jan 2 65...

348675 comes up as a 1973-76 250 ci 6 cylinder (Google search).

My guess: Yes it would be a 1975, if it is a USA 250. This site shows that 1975 is the only year ending in 5 in which 250s were made/used in the USA.

Wait to hear from someone who knows 250s.

I made the assumption that this was a 60's vintage motor, sorry. I can't remember: by 75 did the 250 have the integral intake manifold?

Second sentence in the 250 entry at the link above: Between 1975 and 1984, an integrated cylinder head was produced, with one-barrel intakes for passenger cars, and two-barrel intakes for trucks after 1978.

oldburbs, what's the story on this engine? Going to put it the burb?

Not sure yet. It's presently in a 52 burb i recently bought. I plan to sell it and i'm not sure if i will sell the burb with the 250 eng. or, i also have a 235 that is running that i may put in the burb and keep the 250.
