They are reaonably priced for the popular models. Its not worth it to get stranded somewhere with a clogged up fuel system.

You might try tumbling some heavy nuts/bolts in the tank to knock the stuff loose. I've heard of folks using gravel and short lengths of chain as well. If that doesn't get it you'll probably have to do an acid clean and re-line it or replace it. Do a site search for tank cleaning. You'll find a LOT of threads on the subject.

I plan on using Tiny's route of cleaning it up by throwing in a few short lengths of galvanized swingset chain that I happen to have, with some solvent. I'm pretty confident this will work for me.
I'm not sure what the crystals are in your tank... sand comes to mind. Did it show up in your filter bowl?
I would have to remove the tank and get that mess outa there.

with some of the others that putting in a new tank is the only way to go if you want a
dependable trouble free fuel system for years to come. They may look like new outside
but they go bad from the inside out and I’d stake my wife on it that if it’s a 50+ year old
tank, its gonna be rusty inside.
They are surprisingly inexpensive, just make sure it comes from Specta a Canadian OEM
manufacturer, that way you know it‘s going to be an exact replacement.
