If I go under my truck and grab the bar that runs from 1 tie rod end to the other, I can turn that rod a good half of an inch front and back. Is that normal? Should there be so much play in this rod

Crawl under the truck and turn the rod again. If the 1/2 of rotation is the end rotating on the ball of the steering arm, that is normal. If it is actually unscrewing then the bolts need tightened after the alignment is correct.

Nothing is coming unscrewed. I was just worried this bagginess might make the end pop off the ball.

With the weight off the front axle grab the right front horozontily. Push & pull. If there is any play get someone to do it for you & see if the play is in the tie rod ends. There should be none. Grab the tie rod ends & pull up & down. There should be no play there either. If thats OK then you have nothing to worry about as far as tie rod ends are concerned. Its a good idea to change them over to the new style if you want to work on something & spend some money. Other wise they will be OK.
