I have a leaky rear main that just won't go away, The crank is pitted in that area and just tears up main seals.. There is a bushing that can be fitted over the serface but I can't get the bushing unless I know the exact size of the seal journal.I can't measure mine without dropping the crank. 350 engine about 72. anyone have a old crank laying aroung that you could measure?? The late-model crankshafts that use a 1-piece seal might work with a repair sleeve, but I just can't imagine how to make that repair work with an early style crank. Jerry

I don't know what you are refering to "early" the engine probably is about a 72 era, book shows it a crate engine that covered 15 years.

In about 91 or so, Chevy went to a 1-piece seal similar to an oversized wheel bearing seal, in an alloy carrier that bolts to the back of the engine block. There's simply no way to get a repair sleeve onto the rear seal area of a pre-91 crank, unless it has a split in it, and the joint of the ring would destroy its usefulness as a smooth sealing surface. There is a "speedy sleeve" repair for harmonic balancers with wear grooves in them, but that's on the front of the engine, and has nothing to do with the crankshaft.
A good automotive machine shop could weld up a worn seal area, and regrind it smooth, but the cost would be approximately twice what a new Eagle crank would cost on Ebay. Jerry

You need a knurl either on the crank or the seal or both.If don't the seal has no direction to direct the oil.If you decide to purchase a sleeve contact me and I can put you in touch with a supplier Classic Sleeve.

The crank had been setting around for awhile and has rust pits on the sealing surface. I really hate to pull it out for a oil leak. Thanks for the good advice all especially Brian and fleetside, You have me rethinking the problem
