i thinking of adding a/c to my 235 but i already have power steering located where the compressor needs to go. any suggestion??????? i did do a search and also talked to langdon and he has a kit but it needs to be modified to work on the a/c. also would i need to drill the crank and put a bolt for strength? ron

Hey Ron, I would drill the crank and add that bolt even if you don't add the compressor.

If you located the power steering pump on the upper right side of the motor, you might have a problem finding a compressor mount kit that will work.

If you are running an alternator mounted high on the engine the space where the generator was located could become the new location for the compressor but you will need to fabricate the mounting brackets.

The other alternative would be to put everything in the proper location according to the manual which makes the hunt for the correct brackets much easier.

Best of luck!! Hobert

I am so confused i did further search and did not find a real solution for the problem. if i was a fabricator i am sure i could solve the problem. i am hoping a solution will come up before am ready to add the a/c. tom langdon says he has a solution but can't take the pictures to add to his catalog and is waiting for a friend to return from Florida to take them. it still has to be welded together because it is three pieces and then modified to work. this confusing me if it is a real part why does it need to be modified. ohwell Ron

Not to hi-jack this thread....but I'm researching a way to put A/C on my 50 216 with original 5/8" pulleys, generator, 6 volt and all. Anybody tried that? Thanks Zoo for posting those links anyway.

I may have a solution, i look thru some of my catalogs and came across brackets for an ac alternator conversion form the truck and car shop and i called them and they said it would mount it on the passengers side. be an inveterate skeptic i will call them to verify and if they confirm it i will order it. they did say if it is not used and returned in saleable condition i would get a refund and all i will be out is the postage. i don't think they are correct but i am willing to try. FRANK50, the easy part is installing a/c with and alternator or generator even a 6 volt one the problem comes when you have power steering and have to mount all three. i will post all i have found when it works. yachtcare on this site has a home made bracket and it works for him. i don't have the fabrication skills to do it. well i do have the skills except for the welding part. ron BTW zookeeper's post will get you the brackets you need if you don't add power steering.

Ron, I bought a kit from Old Air (Hurricane) for the 47-55 1st truck. Included was the bracket to mount the compressor low on the driver's side with a bracket extension above to mount the alt or power steering pump. I fabricated a pass side alt mount that runs 1 belt over the waterpump. A Buffalo Enterprises 2 groove modified 250 harmonic balancer provides the direct drive to the dr. side low mount a/c compressor. I'll mount my power steering pump above it and run it off the front groove in the 2 groove a/c compressor. This setup lets me run a 15" 6 blade fan on an adaptor plate early waterpump with ample fan/rad clearance and fan clearance with all the other pulleys. I've got a bunch of pics in my album of the setup. You may want to go a different way but the pics will give you some idea of the basic layout. BTW....I drive my truck everyday...the a/c operates great and the Toyo power steering will be my last add-on. I've used it on my FoMoCo trucks and it's an economical and clean conversion.

Fla54chevy3100, thanks for posting, great pictures. what did you have to do modify the harmonic balancer? Ron

The harmonic balancer is a special order from Buffalo Enterprises, modified specifically for the 235. It starts as a 250 cid balancer, which he machines down and cuts an extra groove in it to run an additional option. In addition, it needs to be rebalanced after his machining operations. He is included in the Stovebolt links.

I chose to go with his 2 groove balancer and the old air low mount a/c compressor...with my alternator placed on the passenger side, so I could run the alt/water pump/crank off one belt instead of fighting the alignment problems with 2 belts, and adding stress to the waterpump bearings. The a/c compressor runs directly off the front groove of the H/B and my p/s pump will be driven off the 2nd groove in the a/c compressor.

Ron...Steve (Buffalo Enterprises) does his business by phone (360)652-7684....doesn't have an interactive website because he doesn't need to advertise!!! However, he does have a listing of some of his products on the Inliners International Site. His former customers referrals keep him supplied with customers for the specialty items he fabricates in his machine shop. Quite a character.

Give him a call, as I think he's the only person (correct me if I'm wrong) who modifies the 250 cid GM balancer to fit the 235. Be advised that it is not cheap, but it's a necessity if you want to run a/c,p/s and an alternator on your 235.

I have a compressor and mount set up off a 235 that uses a York compressor and a plate that fits on a couple special headbolts, with studs on top, and bolts on the passenger side of the engine. I think it was a Mark IV after market unit. It also has a cast iron double water pump pulley and a short belt that wraps the a/c and w/p pulleys. I guess this was because if you run a belt tight enough to turn the a/c that also is on the generator it will kill the generator bushings. Don't know how hard it was on water pumps.
