Does anyone have a picture or color code number for the original color of a 1965 283 engine? I have done some research and know it was a grey-blue but I am looking for some more specific info.

...I've yet to find what I'd consider a really correct 283 grey. I think the closest might be the "Late Greys" that the Filling Station and Hersch offer. We went with the Hersch on the current project.

The color was the same from 1958 until at least 1966 for the 283 they put in pickups, and was probably darker new than it is now, 50 years later but it is for sure not the Dark Grey the sixes had.

That said, I think that next time I'm involved with a 283 truck I'm going to find an unmoletsed valve or timing chain cover and spend the coin to have it matched to see how it looks.

I just painted a 66 1 ton engine Dupli-color's New Ford Grey. The old universal machine grey is no longer available. I think it looks really good,

Painted the engine for my 58 gmc with --rd grey. Looks about right to me.Larry

Problem I have with New Ford Grey is it is too light and too grey. ( Maybe it's too FORD?).
We did the 283 in my '58 'NFG and it looks bitchen, but it's not right. That motor was completely original when I tore it down but I didn't think to try and match the paint.

Just depends on what you want. Nobody would probably ever come up and say that your 283 is the wrong shade, more likely they'd ask "Why isn't it Orange??"
