You don't!
The bolt that holds the pump in is on the inside of the engine.
It is a single bolt with a lock nut screwed through the mount into the pump.

They do not come out. I made that mistake before. They are critical to the alignment of the pump shaft collar in the block. I was scolded here on Stovebolt by more than one Stovebolter for doing so. blush
The pump is removed by loosening a lock bolt on the shaft inside the engine and will slide down and out.

It is the lock nut that is usually tight. have you backed off the lock nut?

How would you back it off? By turning the whole pump assembly?

Take a wrench, if you can a line wrench and unscrew it. It only needs to turn a quarter of a turn. A line wrench is a full hexagon with one side remove.

I guess I am still a bit confused here. I usncrewed the four bolts attachaing the outer housing of the oil pump and both gears came right out!!!
What am I missing here with regards to the other nut??

I was talking about taking the oil pump off. To take it off the block you remove the bolts that is up near where the housing goes into the block. There is a bolt with a locking nut.
