The manual says to "lower the right idler arm" to make room to drop the oil pan. Are these nuts the two to remove to drop the idler arm? Looks like it, but I never did this before, so just don't want to remove them and have the front end fall down on me, or remove them if I don't need to. . Thanks,
Maybe this should be in driveline?

Are you working on a passenger car? If you are working on a pickup with an I beam axle, you don't have an idler arm.

the book does say "idler arm" - they mean the 3rd arm or steering arm, so yes, those 2 bolts would be it, and as you'll have the axle on jack stands, nothing should fall on you except the tie rod ... but I'd think there's an easier way to get the oil pan off, it will not be easy to break that 3rd arm loose after 55 years

Actually Bill I'm working under a lift so I'm not going to have jack stands. The only thing that should be falling anyway ( I think) should be the tie rod and I'll be holding on to that. Yeah, I'm not looking forward to getting that 3rd arm loose. I have been told that you can work the pan out without lowering the tie rod, but it's (allegedly) tougher to get back in and keep the seals on straight, so I'm going to lower it. Should have said this is my 56 pickup. Thanks for the guidance..

I think it would be easier to pop one of the tierods odd the steering arm. I just did that on my 1959 today to adjust the allignment.

In the past when I removed the oilpan in my blue chip Jimmy's, I put jackstands under the frame to allow the suspension to hang lower. Of course I had to do the pan on my back.

You know - that's not a bad idea on the jackstands - The lift has a jack pan so I could put jackstands under the frame to get more room. If it works it would save the need to disassemble anything. Think I'll try that first. Thanks -

So, what's the straight-skinny on dropping the oil pan on a '46 1/2 ton? Can that be done easily enough by supporting the truck on jack stands and letting the suspension hang?

I need to clean the grease-molasses out... I removed the drain plug and NOTHING came out until I poked it and wiggled it a few times with a piece of tubing! It goop'd like latex paint after leaving the lid off the can.
