The hood of my buddy's '53 F-100 panel requires a "wood prop", too. He believes that the hood spring were installed a half-turn too loose after the restoration. Don't know if that is right, or if it is applicable to your Chevy. The F-100 spring and the AD spring are similar. I think that his hood springs are new reproductions. He hasn't attemped a repair yet.

Your post really got me to thinking - maybe I did put the wrong springs on it. So, I found the packaging material and checked: they are marked '58-'59. It looks like I'm back to rebulding or replacing the hinges.
