Hello all. I recently bought a good-running 250 I-6 Chevy engine to power my '46 2-ton. I'm having a bear of a time identifying exactly what year the engine was made and what vehicle it originally came out of (for parts replacement). Anybody have a secret decoder ring for Chevrolet 6-bangers?

The block casting number is: 348675 (250ci between 1973 and 1976)

The numbers on the stamp-pad behind the distributor are:

F0624TAB = engine serial number.
T4F728072 = engine "vin".

As long as you know the year range of manufacturer, any parts within that range will fit that engine.

Engine serial number:

F = Flint, MI
06 = June
24 = day of month
TAB = C10,K10,C20,K20

Engine "VIN"

T = not sure. Examples I've seen start with numbers. "1" is Chevrolet.
4 = year. (74' since you already know it is a 70's block)
F = Flint, MI (place vehicle was assembled)
728072 = last 6 numbers of vehicle VIN repeated on the block.

Excellent! Exactly what I was hoping for. Great thing about this motor is it DOESN'T have the junk integrated cylinder head, but it DOES have the electronic HEI ignition (prob someone else's past upgrade but it works for me)! It's gonna be backed by a 700R4 automatic w/od to help tame the 6.17 rear gears.
