I got it home yesterday and got around to trying to identify it today. The number stamped next to the distributor 0249684 F54Z. The first character might be an O instead of an 0.
I would eventually like to identify the frame to find out what year it is. The engine has four bolts holding down the valve cover and a single pushrod cover. Doesn't appear to have captain's bars.
The VIN decoders I've tried say that the engine is out of a 1974 pickup truck. That seems kind of unlikely.

BTW, guess where the Rochester B off that 292 is going? I think a Holley 350 two barrel might be a little more appropriate for the 292.

The cab isn't original and now the engine isn't original. Fine with me since the '51 4400 also has a '54 235 in it. The '54 engines must have been special in some way. On the other hand, when did the first high pressure 235s become available? Maybe that's why I have two of them in earlier model trucks.

I got it from my "Cars and Parts Truck ID Numbers" book. "F" stands for the assembly plant in Flint, 54 is the year, "Z" is for the 235 engine from a 1500 series truck (sedan/delivery I think). Sounds like the heatwave has put your projects on hold, it's definately slowed mine up some. Hopefully it will break soon. Going to the Kansas City meet? Scott

I couldn't identify either of the engines from the pictures of the vehicles. Because of the shape of the valve cover on Dumpy, and the front mounted oil filler, I had almost convinced myself that it was a late model 292. That would have been great because I wouldn't have to worry about fabricating a motor mount, and I already have one 292, thanks to Scott. So I could have driven the truck long enough to get one engine rebuilt and do a quick swap.
Oh well.
Scott, when is the Kansas City meet? I'd like to go and I'm pretty sure my wife would also.

I have a 53 GMC. The number stamped by the distributer is: XC459392.
There is another on at the front bottom of the block: 3695408.
Any ideas what type of engine this is ?
