I was wondering if the Main Bearing caps on a chevy 250 cid inline 6 block is a match set to the block? Or can they be used on any other inline 6 chevy 250 cid block? Swap around to other blocks? With out doing a Line Bore & Hone job?

I do know of one engine, a 400 Pontiac in a Formula Firebird a buddy of mine split the rear main cap in half while torquing the oil pump bolt. The engine was in the short block stage, bored, tanked etc & pistons/crank already in. He took a chance & replaced the rear main cap w/a used one. He had no desire to tear down & no money left for line boring. The last time I saw him a few months back, the car still ran fine & has never knocked or had any issues, has been 15 yrs & 80k miles or so. I am still amazed.

Thank You all for the reply. Most engines I work on the Main Bearing caps are part of the block they came off of. But I do not have much knowlage on old Inlines. Lucky for me I number each one and know exactly where they go.
I found another set and now I remember they go to the other engine block.
But if I do change them with another block.
Its clear Line Bore & Hone job.

The caps cannot be swapped from engines unless they are line boared. Also the caps must remain in the SAME position they originally came from. So mark them when they come apart. The reason is there is slight variances that is where the line boaring comes in.
