I remember wire brushing them, dipping them in oil and sticking them in. None ever leaked...maybe we're talking different head bolts.

I went to World Heads, and sure enough, in big bold print, it says to use a thread sealant. They make the stuff, so I sure would go with their advice...call them and ask them what they recommend. I thought all small block head bolt holes went into the water jacket...maybe they don't!

I use either Fel-Pro Pli-A-Seal or Permatex high temp thread sealant (the white stuff). From-A-gasket is ok, but will dissolve in gas, so be carefull where you use it. If they're blind tapped, use a engine oil,or anti-seize if it's going into aluminum.

Then I use Permatex Super 300. It's a brush-on sealer that's a thick liquid, somewhat easier to apply than the stuff in the tube. There's also another brush-on liquid Permatex product called 3-D, but Super 300 is compounded to be resistant to things like alcohol and aviation gasoline, so I think it's a better sealer. It's a little hard to find unless you're ordering from a Permatex distributor.
