Hey everyone I am the proud new owner of a set of 1941 New York State plates! I won the auction on ebay, I ended up paying $32.50 including shipping.

Nice find. I took mine to my local Sherwin Williams and had them match the paint color and touched them up rather than restored them. Those look pretty good already, I'd think twice before doing anything but touch up. My opinion.

Those plates look to be in great shape. leave 'em alone or touch 'em up I say.

If you want to re do them tho', here is a good article about how to go about it:

Be careful, I was told years ago that NY will Not allow plates that are re-painted. Anyone know for sure?

Don't know about NY; but for sure FL won't approve a re-painted or touched-up plate. We have to send them off to Tallahassee to have them inspected and authenticated.

New York will NOT allow repainted plates.

This is from the NYS DMV site:

"What are vintage plates?

Vintage plates are the authentic vehicle plates that were issued in NYS during the model year of the vehicle. You can put vintage plates on a historical vehicle instead of historical plates. For example, you can use a set of authentic vehicle plates that the DMV issued in 1963 on a vehicle of model year 1963. You must provide a full set of original vintage plates. The DMV cannot issue a registration for vehicle plates that are copies or that are painted again. Vintage plates issued in the model year of 1972 and earlier must display the embossed year or have the original metal tab for that year. Make sure that the tab is attached and legible. A sticker that indicates the model year is not required to use the vintage plates. Vintage plates issued in the model year of 1973 and later do not have metal tabs or plate stickers."

In MO you have to submit a picture of the plate when you register it. The MO DMV verifies that the number hasn't already been reissued then they reissue it to you as a historic vehicle YOM plate number. After that, they never see it again so restoring it is a non-issue unless you sell the vehicle its registered to and re-register it on another vehicle of the same year.

What Blue Meanie describes is what I did in NYS.

Also, in NYS you can (could?) do this through the mail by taking a picture of your plate(s)/tag(s) and mailing the photo with the application form.
