So they would all be dark gray and the The Filling Station engine paint is very close due to the research they have done.

In the "Pictorial History of Chevrolet 1940-54" there is a picture of the 1947 engine assembly line. It appears that a black starter was installed before the grey engine paint went on. It looks like a fair amount of grey got on the starter.

I am talking engine color now. For some reason people think they get real hot and that they need high temp paint. They don't, just look at your temp gauge, the only really hot spot is around the exhaust ports. You could use good old Rustoleum smoke gray and darken it with some black or better yet some dark navy blue. Biggest thing is getting it surgically clean before you apply the paint. As with the new engines from the factory back in the day, the paint on the exhaust will burn off after a short time.

My engine is at the machine shop right now and I have to assemble it then think about paint. Not to many will know the difference anyway. It looks to me that what may appear as over spray on the starter is simply reflected light. I’d stake my life on the starter, generator breather pipe, distributor and horn as being installed after the engine was painted and them always being painted black. I’ve never seen an original starter with any gray overspray on it.
Rustoleum has gone thru some major expansion over the last decade. Where they only offered the one line of “Rustoleum, stops rust” enamel years ago, they now have a dozen different lines each having a dozen different textures and colors. I’ve used Rustoleum ever since I was a kid back in the 40’s. My dad and brother were always dragging home old machinery and restoring it for the shop and the paint of choice was always Rustoleum Smoke Gray or as it is often referred to, machinery gray or battle ship gray. I see now that they have a light and dark gray in their automotive line of acrylic enamels. I’ll have to see if I can get a sample of the dark gray and compare it to The Filling Station engine gray which I swear by since I‘ve matched it up to several original Chevrolet engine parts that still had there paint intact.
Getting back to Homer, I don’t know how much of the Rustoleum product line is available to Dave up there. I get the impression that Homer is sort of isolated from the rest of the world?

We are at the end of the road BUT, we are not an isolated community, we have a Mcdonalds, Napa CarQuest Safeway. The problem is getting paint shipped, we can get most anything but the specialty stuff coming from the venders because of the hazardous shipping exclusion. That is why I'm also trying to find a good paint code for my 41 to get the proper(or close)paint for the cab and the interior. I talked to a powdercoating guy up the road today and he has a high temp product, I think I'll try it on the intake and exhaust manifolds, time will tell. Dave

He has a 350 small block in it and had the headers powder coated with the high temp silver and it’s held up really well for several years now.
